How to check an image for AI metadata

Three steps. No sign-up and no credits needed.

  1. Pick the original file

Choose or drop a PNG, JPEG or WebP file up to 10 MB. Files exported straight from the generator work best.

  2. Parsed locally in your browser

A Web Worker reads the metadata in the file structure. Pixels are not decoded and no AI service is called.

  3. Review and remove if needed

See the verdict and every extracted field, with AI clues marked in red. Remove the metadata losslessly in one click and download the cleaned image.

What metadata is read

The checker reads common text-based metadata stored inside the file. These are the supported locations and formats.

Which AI clues are recognised

Understanding the results

Results describe the metadata in the file, not the picture itself.

Limitations

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool tell whether an image is AI-generated?

Not with certainty. It only reads metadata clues stored in the file. A clue means a related tool wrote information to the file; finding nothing does not prove the image is not AI-generated.

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The check runs entirely in your browser. The image, filename and results are never sent to a server and are cleared when you refresh or close the page.

Why does an AI image downloaded from social media show nothing?

Most platforms compress uploads and strip their metadata, and screenshots or re-saves lose it too. Use the original file exported from the generator whenever possible.

Can I see Stable Diffusion or ComfyUI prompts?

Yes, if the original file still contains them. The checker shows the raw text of fields such as parameters, prompt and workflow, which may include the prompt, steps, sampler and seed.

How do I remove AI metadata from an image?

After the check, click “Remove metadata”. The tool losslessly strips text, EXIF, XMP, comments and C2PA Content Credentials in your browser, keeps the colour profile and orientation, re-checks the result and lets you download it. Nothing is uploaded or recompressed.

What are C2PA Content Credentials?

C2PA is an open standard for recording where content came from and how it was edited. This tool only detects whether a Content Credentials marker is embedded and does not verify its signature. Content Credentials alone do not indicate AI use.

Do I need to pay or sign in?

No. The AI metadata checker is free, needs no sign-in and uses no credits.
