Upscale AI-generated images: from export to print
Check the actual pixels, lettering and structure of a generated image before upscaling, layout and test printing.
Download the generator’s original file
Whether you use Midjourney or another generator, download the original and inspect its dimensions. Models, versions and aspect ratios affect exports. A chat preview or screenshot is not the full file, and not every generated image is 1024 pixels wide.
Fix structural errors before adding pixels
Inspect fingers, object joints, perspective, signs and repeating patterns. Upscaling does not reliably correct existing structural errors; address them in the original generator or an external editor first. Add exact headlines and brand lettering separately in layout software.
Plan the poster from actual dimensions
For example, a 1024 × 1024 source needs about 2363 × 2363 pixels for a 20 × 20 cm print at 300 PPI. Our square 4K request is 2160 × 2160, so even a matching return would fall short. Consider a smaller print, a lower PPI agreed with the printer, or a larger source export.
Avoid accumulating changes across generations
Keep the original export and save each result separately instead of repeatedly processing the previous output. Review eyes, text and texture, then print a small section at the intended scale. Confirm the permissions for the source and included assets before commercial use.
| Situation | Suggested action | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sound composition, too few pixels | Compare target dimensions with the source | Size does not correct content |
| Incorrect text or structure | Rebuild lettering or the source scene first | Spelling, hands and object connections |
| Preparing a print | Calculate both sides and test-print | Actual pixels, crop and detail |
The dimensions above are a worked example, not fixed generator specifications or measured enhancement results.
